What’s on in St Andrews in the month of December
As the year draws to a close and we head into the festive season there is still time to get out and about and enjoy all the events and activities which make St Andrews and Fife such a great area. Here are a few of the things you might want to take a look at.
Events at the University of St Andrews
You may be interested to know that the University holds regular events throughout the year which are open to the public. These include a free concert by the St Andrews and Fife Community Orchestra from 7 pm on Saturday 1st December then on Sunday 2nd you can attend an A Capella Society Christmas Concert also from 7 pm. Both of these events are held in the Younger Hall. St Leonard’s Chapel will host Nine Lessons and Carols from 8.45 pm on Saturday 8th.
Fife Farmers Market
This is the last farmers market of 2018 which are regularly held at the Argyle Street north car park, this one on Saturday the 1st. Take the chance to stock up your larder for the Christmas period and perhaps pick up a few last-minute gifts from the craft stalls. Cookery demonstrations will no doubt be on hand for Christmas fayre tips!
At the Ends of the Earth
Not literally of course but this, one of Scotland’s famous winter festivals takes place throughout the day and into the evening of the 2nd of December around St Andrews. During the daytime there will be market stalls, circus skills workshops for the daredevils amongst us and lantern making workshops for those who prefer a gentler pastime. The evening hours start with an outdoor ceilidh and a lantern procession. Make sure you stay until the end to see a fabulous firework display at the Harbour. This event is always well attended so if you decide to go then make your arrangements in plenty of time to get there early. And remember to wrap up warm!
Time for Theatre?
As if all this wasn’t enough don’t forget all the fun and entertainment that can be found at the shopping centres, nightclub venues, cinemas and theatres in and around the St Andrews area. The theatre at Newport-On-Tay for instance will be showing the classic family musical, Annie, from the 5th to the 8th of December. Meanwhile the grown-ups could enjoy the nostalgic sounds of a Jersey Boys Tribute Act at the Fairmont St Andrews Hotel on the 14th.
Christmas Market
This time of year wouldn’t be complete without a magical Christmas Market and the one at Lower College Lawn on the 8th, from 10 am – 4 pm, is free for visitors. You will find a host of stalls selling fashion, toys, craft items and gifts for all the family. And as a special treat for little ones Santa and his reindeer will be there in his grotto. Get into the Christmas spirit with a glass of mulled wine while you listen to traditional Christmas carols.
Have a day out or make a weekend of it at one of several hotels in St Andrews which are hosting sumptuous Christmas lunches. Whatever you do make your travel arrangements early.
