Summer events in St Andrews – delivering outdoor fun and culture
With summer only around the corner, the nights are getting longer and the temperatures getting warmer, which means only one thing. It’s FINALLY time to get outside and enjoy the summer months. As the sunshine shines brightly, there are plenty of things to do in St Andrews and the surrounding areas suitable for all tastes and ages. So let’s look at the best events from June into summer so that you can plan the perfect days out.
Fun for all the family
On the 17th of June, St Andrews sailing club is offering free sailing taster sessions in their event ‘push the boat out’. This is an excellent way to get out on the water and explore St Andrews Bay. Why not use this as the perfect opportunity to make a day of it and visit all the local attractions that the Bay offers such as local shops, golf, and beautiful grounds?
A definite date for your diary is the Ceres Highland Games. Located just on the outskirts of St Andrews, taking place on the 24th of June, this free event has something for everyone. This event isn’t just full of your favourite sports and outdoor pursuits to get involved in, it is jammed packed full of fun. From kilts to bagpipes, food and shop stalls, fun fair, a procession and even a history lesson in its origins relating back to the battle of Bannockburn, everyone can get involved in the spirit of the day, making the Ceres Highland Games a perfect day out for all the family.
Byre in the Botanics is also back in St Andrews this year, beginning on the 29th of June until the 29th of July taking place every Thursday to Saturday, with a different event held each night at 7 pm. This event is an ideal one to attend to if you are a music, theatre, opera and dance fan, and yet again this event looks after the whole family. With a selection of children’s films, dance performances, live music from genres such as opera, blues, jazz, folk music and even an orchestra, you’re bound to have a fantastic evening, whatever you choose to do. Tickets prices vary for each event but booking in advance ensures you won’t miss out on the fun.
The sound of music
The 17th of June is the day of Prom Fest, a free event offering live music performances, complete with a beer garden, fun fair, and craft stalls. Set amongst local attractions including local beaches means that prom fest can be the start of a fun-filled summer’s break.
Another one for music lovers, the East Neuk festival taking place on the 28th of June until the 2nd of July is putting on a celebration of music from around the world. With a broad selection of genres and performers set in the beautiful local surroundings, the event will host concerts, films, art, literature events and guided walks. Tickets prices vary for different performers, and as usual booking in advance is recommended. However, if you’re looking to go on a whim, visit the event’s website on the 19th of July for late availability tickets.
Step back in time with Science
An exciting free event is taking place at St Andrews Museum and is perfect for teenage science enthusiasts on the 24th of June. Learn interesting facts, discover ancient secrets and watch science come to life in front of your very eyes. You’re sure to learn something, but this is science delivered outside of the classroom, which we think makes it twice as exciting!
With all this going on in St Andrews this summer, you’ll soon have a jam-packed schedule of things to do, come hail, rain or shine!
